Big Bear

When I was a child, one of the first grocery stores that my mom used to take me to was Big Bear. I used to always bug her to get me one of the sugar cookies in the bakery. If I remember correctly, they were shaped like bears. Although Big Bear is no longer around, it still serves as a nostalgic memory for me, and little did I know the historical significance of this store and how it would continue to tie in to my life.

Big Bear was the creation of Wayne Brown of Columbus, Ohio. He opened what is considered to be the first modern supermerket on Lane Ave. in a roundish looking building that was once a dance hall. Today you would never know where the location of this store was unless you were privy to the location's history. The Riverwatch Tower apartment complex currently stands where it once was. Long before I knew the historical significance of the lot, I had met up with some friends form The Ohio State University in their apartment there.

Big Bear had enjoyed some great success up until after 1989 when it was bought by an investment banker on borrowed money. This investment banker used the purchase to give himself a bonus and slapped his debt on to the store itself. This was apparently a common practice of the time and was a practice that made many rich at the expense of the purchased company. Since Big Bear was in debt, it could not lower prices and could no longer compete with other grocery providers.

Despite many bumps in it's storied history, Big Bear did many things right and often innovated. For instance, it was one of the first stores to sale both home goods and groceries under the same roof. Big Bear Plus in Graceland, Ohio sold home goods like department stores do on one side, and groceries on the other. This concept became an industry standard and can still be seen in stores like Wal-Mart and Target today. The building that this Plus store occupied is now a Kroger. When I first shopped at this Kroger, I remember commenting on how big it was for a Kroger and I wondered why it was selling furniture on one side which Kroger stores rarely do. Of course, I had no idea of the historical significance of this store when I was there.

Big Bear is a store that many outside of the Ohio valley do not know about but they can think this company for the types of stores that we enjoy today.

Hurricane Season

What Hurricane Season has meant to me over the course of my life is worrying about relatives who happen to live on the coast. Now that I live on the coast, Hurricane Season has taken on a new meaning. Even though I live much further north than most people living on the coast, the predictions that this Hurricane Season will be very active have gotten many who live in my area to believe that we may indeed see a full blown hurricane this year. I was in Sandy when it became extra tropical and I was in the super derecho when it rolled through Ohio but I have not experienced a true hurricane. I am starting to wonder if I should start preparing now since I do live 6 blocks from the coast. For those who have had to deal with hurricanes, what should I put in a hurricane preparedness kit?

One Year

The end of this month marks the one year anniversary of my workout routine. Of course, my workout routine has changed over the past year, but the important thing is that I've kept at it. Although I haven't seen all of the changes that I wanted to make of my body, my tone and athleticism has vastly improved. My next goal is to achieve a healthy weight. Unfortunately, I don't earn enough money to eat the way that I should and I am underweight as a result.

If you're on a workout routine or are thinking about starting one, I would be interested in hearing about it in the comments. I have found that discussing workout routines with others helps in the inspiration department.

Lipstick On A Pig

No matter how much you slap lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig, and that's exactly what Windows 8 is. Well, metaphorically speaking anyway. I'm not sure why this isn't common knowledge: Windows 8 is nothing more than a touch UI (in this case metro) slapped on to a severely crippled desktop UI.

There's a reason why the start menu has held it's ground for so long: it is tweaked and optimized for a mouse. The desktop operating system is built for these input devices. I would understand if Microsoft took the metro UI and tweaked it to have all the same features as a desktop operating system would. I would love to see a Windows operating system built from the ground up to be optimized for touch and come tablet like hardware and have the capability to plug in to a second monitor. Imagine being able to throw videos to your monitor while browsing the web on the touch screen and you will understand the type of interface that I am hoping for in the future. As it stands, Windows 8 is just lazy coding on Microsoft's part.

aolOS?

Something occurred to me when looking at iOS 7. The colors are reminiscent of AOL back in the day when AOL was so brightly colored that the colors burned in to your retinas and felt like salt, lighter fluid, and fire (all at the same time) in your eyeballs.

What the HELL happened? Apple is supposed to have great design, right? Maybe they need to resurrect Steve Jobs. The reason that I love iOS is the software is so fine tuned and polished that it's pleasing to the eye and pleasing to work with. Why ruin one of those two things? What possible reason did they have to make their top operating system look like something from a teen girl's magazine (I occasionally glance over my shoulder in the checkout lane after grocery shopping...)? I'm not sure if the new features would be worth the eye strain.

I'm Not Game

Recently, I came to the sudden realization that I haven't been a true gamer since I owned a Nintendo 64 back in the day. I am what some would call a casual gamer. I play games to pass time in between productivity. I can't stand to be on break, so I play Uno as a mindless task to stave off boredom. It's not that I don't enjoy gaming, though. I'm just extremely picky. I enjoy innovation and a good story. I enjoy things that entertain my brain. I love Portal and Portal 2 for this very reason.

If I'm going to spend a few hours on something, I want to be totally immersed in to another world. I want my brain to be exercised. I don't want to slump in to lethargy while killing yet another alien with a weapon that hasn't been invented yet. Unfortunately, that's most games. I am not interested in gaming consoles anymore. The real innovation has been occurring on the PC for awhile now, and so much so that consoles have been catering to independent PC developers. So why should I buy a console when I already have the innovative games on my PC?

Hello Friends

After a long hiatus from what I would call true blogging, I think that I have a reason to blog again. I enjoy writing, but writing every day because I had to in college sort of burnt me out. When I tried to start again, I found that I had largely lost my "step" when it came to writing with personality, but I think that I have it back now. I don't plan to update this blog on a schedule. That seems to fall in to the territory of monotony and monotony and creativity don't seem to mix. Here goes nothing... I hope everyone likes the template.
